SUMMARY:HAP Valentine's Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:Since 2021\, Hyattsville Aging in Place (HAP) has teamed up with local Girl Scouts Honor Cadette Troop 23007 to ensure our Neighbors received a sweet Valentine’s Day surprise. A partnership that started as a way to ensure a sweet Valentine’s Day surprise during the COVID pandemic has proven an ongoing success. \nFor 2024\, Hyattsville Aging in Place is again working with Girl Scouts Claire and Maggie\, who have volunteered at Put Art in Your Heart since they were old enough to use scissors. \nWe are asking people to buy Girl Scout cookies that will be donated to area seniors. The Girl Scouts will make valentines to accompany each box when they deliver them. Each box costs $5 and can be ordered from this page. You can personalize the valentine’s message from the same page\, or\, if you want to make your own valentines for the girls to deliver\, mail them to “Valentines ℅ HAP\, 5104 42nd Ave. Hyattsville\, MD 20781.” You can also sign up for updates on the troop’s valentine-making efforts from the same page. \nThe website for ordering cookies and valentines is open NOW. Cookie orders must be finalized by February 3rd to ensure the troop has time to make all the necessary valentines for delivery. \nNew for 2024: The Hyattsville Horticultural Society will have a Valentine’s Day card-making station at its February 10th Seed Sale at the Hyattsville Municipal Building. People can make their own cards\, or make ones for HAP to distribute!

SUMMARY:Hyattsville Speaks!
DESCRIPTION:Sharing experiences of living and loving throughout the years. Staging stories for our future. Are you interested in taking part in a unique theatrical production session and having a conversation with the artists? This is your chance to take part in a unique theatrical production written and read by your neighbors and help the artists move to their next stage\, plus learn how you can get involved. These artists collaborated with Yard Dramas\, a theatre arts education and creative learning company based in Hyattsville\, in 2023. Jennifer Ridgway\, founder/owner of Yard Dramas\, worked with HAP members and Hyattsville elders to build connections\, nurture imaginations\, and integrate their lived experiences into a one-of-a-kind theatrical production. The goal was to showcase Hyattsville’s senior community and bring them to the forefront of public consciousness\, including the Mayor and City Council. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with the artists and learn more about this exciting project!

SUMMARY:Living (and Aging) Well With Technology
DESCRIPTION:Technology can be so frustrating and even more so if you have physical or cognitive limitations. This session will review the many ways you can help yourself and your family use existing everyday technologies — with much less frustration — to improve the quality of life. Intelligent assistants such as the Amazon Echo’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri can help keep you connected with simple voice commands. Erin Byrne from TechMoxie will discuss how we have used these devices with great success to help clients with physical limitations such as Parkinson’s or cognitive impairment. Voice commands are often much easier (and less frustrating) than navigating the many layers of a smartphone app or computer. Learn ways to use intelligent assistants to use their voice to send text messages\, make phone calls\, turn lights on/off\, unlock doors\, listen to radio and even play audio books. We will also discuss privacy considerations that may impact your clients and families.

SUMMARY:Put Art in Your Heart Valentines 2025
DESCRIPTION:Since 2021\, Hyattsville Aging in Place (HAP) has teamed up with local Girl Scouts Honor Cadette Troop 23007 to ensure our Neighbors received a sweet Valentine’s Day surprise. A partnership that started as a way to ensure a sweet Valentine’s Day surprise during the COVID pandemic has proven an ongoing success. \nFor 2025\, Hyattsville Aging in Place is again working with Girl Scouts Claire and Maggie\, who have volunteered at Put Art in Your Heart since they were old enough to use scissors. \nWe are asking people to buy Girl Scout cookies that will be donated to area seniors. The Girl Scouts will make valentines to accompany each box when they deliver them. Each box costs $6 and can be ordered from this page. Cookie orders must be finalized by February 2nd to ensure the troop has time to make all the necessary valentines for delivery. \nHelp Us Make Cards: The Hyattsville Horticultural Society will have a Valentine’s Day card-making station at its February 8th Seed Sale at the Hyattsville Municipal Building. People can make their own cards\, or make ones for HAP to distribute!

SUMMARY:Columbia Air Center: Determined to Fly
DESCRIPTION:Columbia Air Center\, also known as Riverside Airfield\, was the first licensed Black-owned and operated airport in the United States. Located in Croom\, Prince George’s County\, Maryland\, it operated from 1940–1962. Columbia Air Center was more than an airfield\, it was a home for the Black community\, an expression of self-determination. Its history and legacy have been largely overlooked. Since 2022\, College Park Aviation Museum has been honored to work with four Columbia Air Center’s descendant families and pilots to create the exhibition “Columbia Air Center – Determined to Fly.” This exhibit will be located in one of the museum’s three 800 sq ft. galleries and is scheduled to open to the public in the fall of 2025. Please join Museum Director Dr. Nadine Boksmati-Fattouh and Collections Curator and project lead Luke Perez as they talk about the curatorial approach and implementation of this groundbreaking interactive exhibition. \nCorridor Conversations are organized by Hyattsville Aging in Place\, Helping Hands University Park\, Neighbors Helping Neighbors of College Park\, and Explorations on Aging. SUMMARY:Made in Maryland
DESCRIPTION:It’s no secret that Maryland is home to hundreds of creatives who design\, craft\, roast\, stitch\, bake\, weld\, brew and build amazing products—and now there is a retail initiative dedicated to helping them grow. This modern-day incubator is a platform for creativity—enabling ideas\, products\, and people to converge and drive traffic to neighborhoods while creating low entry-to-market opportunities for Maryland-based makers and small retailers.  Founded by Stacey Price of People Make Place and Michael Babin of Neighborhood Restaurant Group\, Shop Made in Maryland is dedicated to showcasing the talents of MD-based designers\, artists\, and makers. \nDATE UPDATED TO MAY 31!
