SUMMARY:Put Art in Your Heart 2023
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, Hyattsville Aging in Place (HAP) hosts a valentine party\, Put Art in Your Heart\, that brings people of all ages from Hyattsville and the surrounding communities together to make valentines for area seniors. Starting in 2021\, to ensure that seniors did not miss out on these caring notes despite the difficulties of the COVID pandemic\, HAP teamed up with local Girl Scouts Honor Cadette Troop 23007 to ensure our Neighbors received a sweet Valentine’s Day surprise. It was a rousing success. \nFor 2023\, Hyattsville Aging in Place is again working with Girl Scouts Claire and Maggie\, who have volunteered at Put Art in Your Heart since they were old enough to use scissors. \nWe are asking people to buy Girl Scout cookies that will be donated to area seniors. The Girl Scouts will make valentines to accompany each box when they deliver them. Each box costs $5 and can be ordered from this page. You can personalize the valentine’s message from the same page\, or\, if you want to make your own valentines for the girls to deliver\, mail them to “Valentines ℅ HAP\, 5104 42nd Ave. Hyattsville\, MD 20781.” You can also sign up for updates on the troop’s valentine-making efforts from the same page. \nThe website for ordering cookies and valentines is open NOW. Cookie orders must be finalized by February 10th to ensure the troop has time to make all the necessary valentines for delivery.

SUMMARY:The Political & The Personal: The Poetry of the Women’s Liberation Movement
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on personal experiences and scholarship\, Deborah Rosenfelt\, Ph.D.\, Professor Emerita in the Harriet Tubman Department of Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Maryland\, will reflect on the contributions of poets of the late 20th century Women’s Liberation Movement in shaping thought and action. Audre Lorde\, one of the most influential Movement poets\, famously asserted “Poetry Is Not a Luxury.” Lorde saw poetry as a source of deep personal and communal knowledge\, forming “the quality of the light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams toward survival and change.” Her definition is linked to one of the central slogans of the movement: “the personal is political.” Examining selected poems\, we’ll discuss how women’s poetry\, along with other forms of art and thought\, helped to expand the meaning of “the political” and played a crucial role in envisioning the need and possibilities for social change.

SUMMARY:History of the Lakeland Community in College Park
DESCRIPTION:View a recording of this event here. \nJoin us to learn more about Lakeland\, the historic African American community of College Park. Formed around 1890 on the doorstep of the Maryland Agricultural College\, now the University of Maryland\, the story of Lakeland is the tale of a community that was established and flourished in a segregated society\, developing its own institutions and traditions\, including the area’s only high school for African Americans\, built in 1928. The Lakeland Community Heritage Project\, was formed to preserve Lakeland’s history and the stories of its people through photographic archives and oral histories. Lakeland Community Heritage Project members Maxine Gross\, Violetta Sharps-Jones\, Courtnie Thurston\, and Robert Thurston will lead the session.

SUMMARY:Flour in Her Veins: Holiday Baking
DESCRIPTION:Cheryl Harrington says she learned early that she had flour in her veins. She worked in her parents’ homestyle bakery in Massachusetts before going to college\, and she never lost her love of baking. Even during her career with the Prince George’s County Council\, Cheryl made wedding cakes\, birthday cakes\, and other goodies for friends. After years being encouraged to start her own bakery\, she opened Shortcake Bakery in Hyattsville in 2011 where she creates baked sweet baked goods\, savory meat pies\, quiches\, brunches and more. Cheryl will get us ready for the holiday season with ideas about cookies\, pies\, and her famous Nantucket Cranberry Pie.
