SUMMARY:The Political & The Personal: The Poetry of the Women’s Liberation Movement
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on personal experiences and scholarship\, Deborah Rosenfelt\, Ph.D.\, Professor Emerita in the Harriet Tubman Department of Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Maryland\, will reflect on the contributions of poets of the late 20th century Women’s Liberation Movement in shaping thought and action. Audre Lorde\, one of the most influential Movement poets\, famously asserted “Poetry Is Not a Luxury.” Lorde saw poetry as a source of deep personal and communal knowledge\, forming “the quality of the light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams toward survival and change.” Her definition is linked to one of the central slogans of the movement: “the personal is political.” Examining selected poems\, we’ll discuss how women’s poetry\, along with other forms of art and thought\, helped to expand the meaning of “the political” and played a crucial role in envisioning the need and possibilities for social change.

SUMMARY:History of the Lakeland Community in College Park
DESCRIPTION:View a recording of this event here. \nJoin us to learn more about Lakeland\, the historic African American community of College Park. Formed around 1890 on the doorstep of the Maryland Agricultural College\, now the University of Maryland\, the story of Lakeland is the tale of a community that was established and flourished in a segregated society\, developing its own institutions and traditions\, including the area’s only high school for African Americans\, built in 1928. The Lakeland Community Heritage Project\, was formed to preserve Lakeland’s history and the stories of its people through photographic archives and oral histories. Lakeland Community Heritage Project members Maxine Gross\, Violetta Sharps-Jones\, Courtnie Thurston\, and Robert Thurston will lead the session.

SUMMARY:Flour in Her Veins: Holiday Baking
DESCRIPTION:Cheryl Harrington says she learned early that she had flour in her veins. She worked in her parents’ homestyle bakery in Massachusetts before going to college\, and she never lost her love of baking. Even during her career with the Prince George’s County Council\, Cheryl made wedding cakes\, birthday cakes\, and other goodies for friends. After years being encouraged to start her own bakery\, she opened Shortcake Bakery in Hyattsville in 2011 where she creates baked sweet baked goods\, savory meat pies\, quiches\, brunches and more. Cheryl will get us ready for the holiday season with ideas about cookies\, pies\, and her famous Nantucket Cranberry Pie.

SUMMARY:Put Art in Your Heart 2021
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, Hyattsville Aging in Place (HAP) hosts a valentine party\, Put Art in Your Heart\, that brings people of all ages from Hyattsville and the surrounding communities together to make valentines for area seniors.  Due to COVID\, the in-person event isn’t happening this year and the hundreds of seniors who receive these caring notes would lose one more show of kindness to the pandemic. To ensure that our Neighbors receive a sweet Valentine’s Day surprise\, HAP has teamed up with Girl Scouts Honor Cadette Troop 23007\, whose members Claire and Maggie have volunteered at Put Art in Your Heart since they were old enough to use scissors. \nWe are asking people to buy Girl Scout cookies that will be donated to area seniors. The Girl Scouts will make valentines to accompany each box when they deliver them. Each box costs $5 and can be ordered from this page. You can personalize the valentine’s message from the same page\, or\, if you want to make your own valentines for the girls to deliver\, mail them to Valentines ℅ HAP\, 5104 42nd Ave. Hyattsville\, MD 20781. You can also sign up for updates on the troop’s valentine-making efforts from the same page. \nCookie orders must be finalized by February 11th to ensure the troop has time to make all the necessary valentines for delivery.

SUMMARY:Support Hyattsville Aging in Place
DESCRIPTION:2020 proved a year of challenges for all of us\, and it was for Hyattsville Aging in Place as well. COVID-19 forced us to cancel some of our traditional events and to rethink how we continue to help our Neighbors. With the help and participation from our members\, volunteers\, and donors\, however\, HAP found new and exciting ways to engage\, inform\, and help combat social isolation for Hyattsville seniors. \nWe’ve hosted online educational events about COVID-19 and long-term care. We’ve made friendly calls to check in with Neighbors and delivered care packages and a very successful holiday lunch from Franklins — via carryout. And\, thanks to a grant from the Greater Washington Community Foundation\, we provided direct aid to nearly 200 seniors in Hyattsville and neighboring communities — as well as to area food pantries. \nFor 2021\, we will continue to innovate and adapt. We have an online event about reducing the drama of legal issues and aging scheduled for January 30\, and we are planning a COVID-safe twist for our annual Art in Your Heart Valentine-making event. Starting in February we will work with other Route 1 programs for seniors to develop programs on the arts\, history and culture. \nIt is with your support that we are able to help Hyattsville residents stay in their homes and remain active in the community as they age. Hyattsville Aging in Place is a membership organization and our dues are due on a calendar year basis. If you are not a current HAP supporter\, please consider joining for 2021 now (dues $35 for singles\, $40 for a couple) and making a donation of any size.

SUMMARY:Pandemic Services
DESCRIPTION:HAP is determined to continue serving seniors in Hyattsville while making sure that they\, the HAP volunteers that serve them\, and the community remain safe in this stressful and difficult time. We hope these restrictions will not continue indefinitely\, but for now we believe that maintaining social distance is critically important. Here is what we’ve decided: \n\nUntil further notice\, HAP will no longer be driving members to the doctor\, grocery stores or other locations. However\, we have a partnership with a service that provides on-call access to rideshare services. This allows HAP to connect seniors to a Lyft or Uber driver via telephone\, and HAP will cover the cost of rides to necessary medical appointments. Contact the HAP office (301-887-3101 or hapcares@gmail.com) for information about other sources of transportation.\nAll HAP events have been postponed. New dates will be announced when available\, and HAP is exploring options for online and telephonic programs.\nUntil it’s safe to resume normal activities\, HAP services will be limited to no-contact delivery of groceries\, masks\, and other supplies; telephone check-in with Neighbors through the HAP phone tree; and information and referral through the HAP office. Neighbors who need delivery service\, want to be included on the telephone list\, or have questions about other available services should contact the HAP office at 301-887-3101 or hapcares@gmail.com.\n\nIf you know seniors that may need help or if you want to volunteer\, please send us their names and contact information or have them go to the HAP website (HyattsvilleAginginPlace.org)\, hapcares@gmail.com to sign up or call the HAP office at 301-887-3101. \nIf you need more information\, below are some suggested resources: \n\nAdministration for Community Living (ACL):Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19): What Older Adults and People with Disabilities Need to Know?\nCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):COVID-19 Guidance for Older Adults Resources for Home: Plan\, Prepare\, and Respond to Coronavirus Disease 2019\nNational Foundation for Infectious Diseases:Frequently Asked Questions About Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)\nAARP:AARP Coronavirus Pandemic Information\n\nDownload a copy of this information for sharing.
