The dishes will be primarily stews of chicken\, lamb\, or vegetarian options (or a combination of those) and are eaten with a spongy sort of “bread” called injera. There is no silverware—you use the Injera to pick up the food. You can order your own dish or order with other people and share the dishes on a large platter in the center of your table. Shagga offers us not only lunch\, but a small sample of Ethiopian culture. Visit shaggarestaurant.com/menu to get a preview of the menu!

SUMMARY:Valentine's Day Cookie Order Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, Hyattsville Aging in Place (HAP) is teaming up with local Girl Scouts to ensure our Neighbors received a sweet Valentine’s Day surprise. A partnership that started as a way to ensure a sweet Valentine’s Day surprise during the COVID pandemic has proven a recurring bit of winter joy. \nFor 2026\, Hyattsville Aging in Place is working with Hyattsville Third-Grade Brownie Troop 23041\, whose scouts have regularly helped with Valentine card-making for the program. \nWe are asking people to buy Girl Scout cookies that will be donated to area seniors. The Girl Scouts will make valentines to accompany each box when they deliver them. Each box costs $6 and can be ordered from this page. You can personalize the valentine’s message from the same page\, or\, if you want to make your own valentines for the girls to deliver\, mail them to “Valentines ℅ HAP\, P.O. Box 113\, Hyattsville\, MD 20781.” You can also sign up for updates on the troop’s valentine-making efforts from the same page. \nThe website for ordering cookies and valentines is open NOW. Cookie orders must be finalized by February 7th to ensure the troop has time to make all the necessary valentines for delivery.

SUMMARY:The Hows and Whys of Accessory Dwelling Units
DESCRIPTION:Under Maryland law all counties must develop rules governing the creation of Accessory Dwelling Units by October 2026. ADUs are smaller attached additions or freestanding units sharing a lot with an existing structure. ADUs offer a way to provide housing for those who can’t afford existing rents or mortgages\, for older residents to downsize from an existing home\, or to provide a close space for an older relative. Montgomery County has allowed ADUs since 2019\, Prince George’s has not (but has a task force meeting now) and College Park’s Task Force on Affordability just released a report containing a detailed section on ADUs. Join us for a lively discussion with Montgomery County’s Eric Saul of Saul Architects and College Park’s Robert Thurston and others who developed the ADU section of their Task Force report.

SUMMARY:Longevity Maryland: What You Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:Marylanders are living longer than ever. In 2000\, the 60 and older population represented 15% of people in the state; by 2020\, that percentage grew to 23%. Looking ahead to 2030\, Marylanders age 60+ can expect to represent about 26% of the population. \nOlder adults offer tremendous value to the Maryland landscape. They fuel local economies\, provide support for families\, and contribute to the community in many ways. But how long and how well Marylanders live depends largely on their ZIP code. Recognizing the need to prepare for a more equitable future for the 100-year life expectancy\, Governor Wes Moore signed an executive order mandating the development of Longevity Ready Maryland (LRM)\, a ten-year multisector plan for aging to address the challenges and maximize the benefits and opportunities of an aging society. \nJoin Jennifer Crawley\, deputy secretary of the Maryland Department of Aging\, to learn more about what Maryland is doing to ensure equal access to coordinated care\, services\, and social determinants that enable healthy longevity\, we can become a state where all Marylanders lead healthy\, financially secure\, socially connected\, and purposeful lives. \nClick Here to Register to Receive the Zoom Link. \nCorridor Conversations is organized by Hyattsville Aging in Place\, Neighbors Helping Neighbors College Park\, Helping Hands University Park\, Gateway Aging Together\, and Explorations on Aging College Park.

SUMMARY:Spring Garden Planning Starts in the Fall
DESCRIPTION:For perennial wildflowers\, autumn is prime time to sow native seeds\, plant bare-root perennials\, and divide established clumps. Fall planting allows roots to establish before winter\, giving you vibrant blooms and pollinator habitat as early as next spring. \nIn the kitchen garden and food forests\, fall is when you order your bare roots\, fertilize your berry bushes\, your asparagus\, plant rhubarb\, and other hardy perennials. It’s also the ideal moment to sheet-mulch new beds\, spread compost\, and sow cover crops that will build soil over winter. \nBy planning and planting in fall\, you’ll wake up to stronger plants\, richer soil\, and an earlier\, more abundant harvest next season. Remember: the best spring gardens are born in the fall. \nJoin Victory Gardens Coach Renaud Beauchard to learn ways to prepare your garden now for a successful spring!
