SUMMARY:Longevity Maryland: What You Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:Marylanders are living longer than ever. In 2000\, the 60 and older population represented 15% of people in the state; by 2020\, that percentage grew to 23%. Looking ahead to 2030\, Marylanders age 60+ can expect to represent about 26% of the population. \nOlder adults offer tremendous value to the Maryland landscape. They fuel local economies\, provide support for families\, and contribute to the community in many ways. But how long and how well Marylanders live depends largely on their ZIP code. Recognizing the need to prepare for a more equitable future for the 100-year life expectancy\, Governor Wes Moore signed an executive order mandating the development of Longevity Ready Maryland (LRM)\, a ten-year multisector plan for aging to address the challenges and maximize the benefits and opportunities of an aging society. \nJoin Jennifer Crawley\, deputy secretary of the Maryland Department of Aging\, to learn more about what Maryland is doing to ensure equal access to coordinated care\, services\, and social determinants that enable healthy longevity\, we can become a state where all Marylanders lead healthy\, financially secure\, socially connected\, and purposeful lives. \nClick Here to Register to Receive the Zoom Link. \nCorridor Conversations is organized by Hyattsville Aging in Place\, Neighbors Helping Neighbors College Park\, Helping Hands University Park\, Gateway Aging Together\, and Explorations on Aging College Park.

SUMMARY:The Hows and Whys of Accessory Dwelling Units
DESCRIPTION:Under Maryland law all counties must develop rules governing the creation of Accessory Dwelling Units by October 2026. ADUs are smaller attached additions or freestanding units sharing a lot with an existing structure. ADUs offer a way to provide housing for those who can’t afford existing rents or mortgages\, for older residents to downsize from an existing home\, or to provide a close space for an older relative. Montgomery County has allowed ADUs since 2019\, Prince George’s has not (but has a task force meeting now) and College Park’s Task Force on Affordability just released a report containing a detailed section on ADUs. Join us for a lively discussion with Montgomery County’s Eric Saul of Saul Architects and College Park’s Robert Thurston and others who developed the ADU section of their Task Force report.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for community conversation about traditions\, family\, and the importance of coming together to share food from diverse backgrounds. SUMMARY:Are You Ready for an Emergency?
DESCRIPTION:Join Rasheed Plummer from the Prince George’s County Office of Homeland Security for a presentation on Emergency Preparedness. September is National Preparedness Month\, an annual campaign to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies. It’s a time to encourage individuals\, families\, and communities to take steps to be ready for various situations\, including natural disasters and other emergencies. This summer we’ve seen an unusual number of severe storms\, flash flooding and excessive heat warnings\, so the threat is real. \nFor most people\, disasters and emergencies are not a part of everyday life\, so when something happens\, they are taken by surprise. We want to help you avoid this by providing information on how to develop an emergency plan\, prepare an emergency to go kit and understand how to stay informed. Having items ready to go in a waterproof bag will make it easier to piece your life back together if you are forced to evacuate. This session will focus on personal documents you’ll want to have at hand along with some cash\, a list of contacts\, glasses\, medications\, batteries and personal hygiene items.

SUMMARY:Columbia Air Center: Determined to Fly
DESCRIPTION:Columbia Air Center\, also known as Riverside Airfield\, was the first licensed Black-owned and operated airport in the United States. Located in Croom\, Prince George’s County\, Maryland\, it operated from 1940–1962. Columbia Air Center was more than an airfield\, it was a home for the Black community\, an expression of self-determination. Its history and legacy have been largely overlooked. Since 2022\, College Park Aviation Museum has been honored to work with four Columbia Air Center’s descendant families and pilots to create the exhibition “Columbia Air Center – Determined to Fly.” This exhibit will be located in one of the museum’s three 800 sq ft. galleries and is scheduled to open to the public in the fall of 2025. Please join Museum Director Dr. Nadine Boksmati-Fattouh and Collections Curator and project lead Luke Perez as they talk about the curatorial approach and implementation of this groundbreaking interactive exhibition. \nCorridor Conversations are organized by Hyattsville Aging in Place\, Helping Hands University Park\, Neighbors Helping Neighbors of College Park\, and Explorations on Aging. SUMMARY:Living (and Aging) Well With Technology
DESCRIPTION:Technology can be so frustrating and even more so if you have physical or cognitive limitations. This session will review the many ways you can help yourself and your family use existing everyday technologies — with much less frustration — to improve the quality of life. Intelligent assistants such as the Amazon Echo’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri can help keep you connected with simple voice commands. Erin Byrne from TechMoxie will discuss how we have used these devices with great success to help clients with physical limitations such as Parkinson’s or cognitive impairment. Voice commands are often much easier (and less frustrating) than navigating the many layers of a smartphone app or computer. Learn ways to use intelligent assistants to use their voice to send text messages\, make phone calls\, turn lights on/off\, unlock doors\, listen to radio and even play audio books. We will also discuss privacy considerations that may impact your clients and families.
