Spring Garden Planning Starts in the Fall

September 26 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

For perennial wildflowers, autumn is prime time to sow native seeds, plant bare-root perennials, and divide established clumps. Fall planting allows roots to establish before winter, giving you vibrant blooms and pollinator habitat as early as next spring.

In the kitchen garden and food forests, fall is when you order your bare roots, fertilize your berry bushes, your asparagus, plant rhubarb, and other hardy perennials. It’s also the ideal moment to sheet-mulch new beds, spread compost, and sow cover crops that will build soil over winter.

By planning and planting in fall, you’ll wake up to stronger plants, richer soil, and an earlier, more abundant harvest next season. Remember: the best spring gardens are born in the fall.
